I’ve recently got myself a new computer (comp) table. It’s not really a comp table per se, and I didn’t spend a single cent on it. It’s actually a TV platform, and it was given to me by my bro-in-law. I guess by looking at things from diff angles, some things can be used for purposes they weren’t originally made for. Much like recycling more or less.
The table I bought from Ikea, as I found out, wasn’t made to support the weight of a comp monitor. It, over time, became dented towards the centre. I was thinking of getting myself a new comp table proper, but was always putting it off. Luckily for me, this TV platform saved me from having to cough up the cash for it and the hassle. So you see, procrastination DOES pay! Sometimes. Haha!
I was out somewhere and when I came home, my sis and bro-in-law were re-arranging the furniture in their room. He was just about to bring out the platform to throw it when I stopped him. As I also do not have a proper TV rack, I told him to just put it in my room. He said ok, and though the backing was slightly damaged, he could help fix that up.
After putting it in my room, he suggested using it as a comp table instead, seeing the terrible condition my current one was in, and how a lot of stuff were strewn on it! I could put the monitor on top, and junk all my stuff inside the compartments, he said. Slightly surprised at his take on the platform, as I was actually planning to use it AS a TV rack, I was hit by a ‘Why not?’ moment. Not a bad idea, I thought.
Soon after, I set upon the task of replacing the table with the rack. This involves taking out all the wires attached to the computer. Trust me when I say it’s tedious work. I really hate doing the wiring thing. I did it once when I moved from Bukit Batok, again when I bought the table, and now. It’s so messy having wires lying all around! After taking out the wiring and putting aside the monitor, mouse, keyboard etc, I turned the table over, dismantled, and disposed of it. As the carpet below the table was quite dusty, I vacuumed it too. Would be better that way I see it.
As the space is now free, the platform came in first. The CPU was placed on the floor, just beside it. On top of it went the monitor, cable modem, speakers, mouse and keyboard. Inside the compartments went my HP AIO device and the wire extension for all the power plugs. That was the easy part. The hard part? Wirings! For all the paraphernalia. Gosh I hate wiring!
As I don’t have a bed in my room, I usually put my mattress behind the old table. I planned to do the same now, as in putting it behind the platform. As such, when the mattress is not behind the platform, all the wirings could be seen. Such a mess! Short of buying a wire cable, I decided to just hide the wires below the platform instead. Would look much neater that way. There is this one small hole at the back of the platform, and I made sure only the necessary wirings protrude from this. Power for the CPU, monitor and cable modem. Even so, I used cable ties to tie up the hanging wires.
It sure is nice to see the end product after all the shifting, moving, dismantling and wiring and re-wiring. As the platform is low, it doesn’t take as much space as the table. My room is so much more spacious now!
